A brief guide to our immortality

Desire

The Kabbalah says that on a most fundamental level humans are creatures of desire, the most basic being that of sexual desire, with its roots in animal lust. The next level of desire is concerned with honour, power and prestige and the last level is the desire for intellectually driven goals. All desire relates to us being like an empty vessel needing to be filled. Behind all desire is the need to be constantly happy. Followers of the Kabbalah say this is really the desire to be filled with ‘Light’.

Light

Light is a metaphor for all the colours of joy that people wish for. The difference between joy and fulfilment is our need for continuous fulfilment. The source of our unhappiness is the fear of being cut off from the Light. In life we often strive towards obtaining some object to bring us joy only to find that the joy it brings is not long lasting. The Kabbalah says that the Light is everywhere in the universe but is separated by a thin film that cuts our reality off from the rest of existence. Our reality, the material finite existence, occupies about one per cent of the universe, while everything else is flooded with Light. When we are filled with joy we temporarily break through the film that separates us from the Light. When we make great discoveries it is said that we have accessed the Light where everything already exists and is just waiting to be discovered. Our world is a place of dark and chaos compared to that of the Light, which is a world of action.

The Beginning

It is said that at the beginning of the universe there was an endless expanse of energy or giving. There was also a vessel to receive this energy or giving. For every desire contained in the energy there was a corresponding receiver in the vessel to collect it, if there was a lustful need for sex in the energy then a lustful desire for sex was aroused within the vessel. Kabbalists teach that the vessel had two aspects, a male and a female, with the code names Adam and Eve; they believe the entire bible is not meant as a straightforward text to be taken literally but rather a set of complex codes for us to decipher. They say that the only real act of creation was that of the vessel. In the ninety-nine per cent of reality there is only the harmony of endless Light from the true source (or God) and endless receiving from the infinite vessel. It is said that the vessel created a new desire, the desire to create its own fulfilment, the vessel resisted the Light; the result was a huge explosion of energy or Big Bang. Our little one per cent universe was purposely brought about for us to create our own fulfilment and find our own way, cut off from the Light. The vessel’s resistance caused the Light to withdraw and create a vacant space, a tiny point of darkness within the Endless World of Light. The vessel was given the illusion of time and space so it could evolve in its own divine manner. Time and Space created our universe.

The Endless World was deconstructed to allow the vessel to rebuild it in its own way. Every human being has a soul that is a fragment of the vessel, meaning we can become creators of our own fulfilment and instigators of our own joy; realising our deepest desire.
