A talisman is an object believed to have magic power or bring good luck. Talismans are not necessarily crafted from precious metals, they were mostly made from natural materials – for example a fisherman’s necklace of sharks teeth to protect him from danger whilst fishing. On the other hand a large ruby, kept in the Tower of London is a talisman of the UK royal family. Rubies are associated with the Roman god of war and believed to offer protection and success in battle. Henry V had the Ruby placed in his crown and it saved his life in 1415 at the battle of Agincourt as it deflected a blow to his head. Ever since the ruby has been a talisman of protection for the royal family. Many Jewish homes have small metal tube nailed to their doorpost, inside the tube is a scroll on which is written the major Jewish prayer. This talisman is called a mezuzah and is believed to consecrate the house and protect occupants. An amulet differs from a talisman because it gives general protection against bad luck. Whereas a talisman usually brings luck, prosperity or protection. Talismans can be made from metal, leather or parchment, but a short term talisman can be made from paper. Simply draw a suitable symbol and write a meaningful inscription on it and visualise the benefits you wish your talisman to provide, place it in a silk pouch. Then charge your talisman, best after a new moon, by placing it in a container with things associated with what you want. Twice a day for three days hold the container whilst visualising your goal. After three days your talisman should respond in your hand, if fully charged it will feel warm when you think about your wish. Talismans are big in Hollywood too – Angelina Jolie is said to have given Brad Pitt one made from bats’ ashes to ward off accidents, he is said to keep it in his car. In experiments the British Psychological Society found that 30% of people they tested claimed to feel more confident, luckier and optimistic after carrying a charm for a month. However the charm had no influence on chance events like lottery cards. The scientists concluded belief is the key. If you feel lucky you are lucky! Essential Reading:
